Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, recently unveiled its latest AI chatbot, Grok, intended to compete with major players like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft’s Bing.
Grok is currently in beta, undergoing limited testing in the United States. Described as an AI inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Grok not only answers questions but also suggests them with a touch of humour and a rebellious streak.
xAI aims to create AI tools that assist in human understanding and knowledge. Grok runs on xAI’s Grok-1 large language model (LLM), developed over four months with multiple iterations.
Initially, xAI trained a prototype LLM, Grok-0, with 33 billion parameters, displaying capabilities comparable to Meta’s Llama 2 on standard LM benchmarks. Despite using only half of its training resources, Grok-0 performs well, achieving 63.2% on the Human-eval coding task and 73% on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) dataset.
Grok taps into real-time information via the 𝕏 platform and is designed to handle challenging questions. Elon Musk envisions Grok AI as not only an inbuilt feature on X but also a standalone app, eventually integrating into X Premium+ subscriptions.
The exact release date for Grok’s broader availability and compatibility with Android and iOS is yet to be announced. Enthusiasts can join the waitlist to try the prototype before the official release. xAI promises ongoing developments with new features rolling out in the coming months, signalling an exciting future for AI enthusiasts.
