Nvidia and AMD GPUs form an unexpected alliance Experience the unconventional pairing of an AMD RX 6600 and Nvidia RTX 4090 within a single system, as discovered by Quasar Zone. While the concept of dual GPU setups isn’t ground-breaking, the convergence of AMD and Nvidia graphics cards in the same rig is a daring venture. The results, though impressive, come with significant caveats.
Quasar Zone explored this seemingly “wild idea” and, against the odds, achieved commendable benchmarks. The experiment aimed to leverage the combined capabilities of Nvidia’s DLSS 3 and AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), the latter still in its experimental phase.
Executing such a GPU tandem is no easy feat, involving a challenging setup process. After installing the RTX 4090 and RX 6600 alongside an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D in the test system, the tester navigated the complexity of installing drivers for both GPUs, including a beta driver for the AMD card to activate AFMF. The RX 6600 became the primary GPU, while the RTX 4090 handled rendering. In this configuration, the AMD card controlled the display output, and the Nvidia GPU managed game rendering.
It’s crucial to understand the distinct functions of DLSS 3 and AFMF. DLSS 3, exclusive to RTX 40 GPUs and dependent on game support, enhances frame rates by injecting generated images between rendered frames. On the other hand, AFMF operates at the driver level, compatible with all DX11 and DX12 games. By setting up the GPUs in this manner, games could benefit from Nvidia’s DLSS 3 before undergoing AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames before reaching the display.

The results were impressive, with Quasar Zone achieving significant FPS increases in demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Starfield (excluding DLSS Frame Generation). In Cyberpunk 2077, native performance nearly tripled, reaching up to 209 fps with both DLSS Frame Generation and AFMF enabled鈥攁n extraordinary 291% increase over native FPS. Similar performance gains were observed in other titles, highlighting the potential of this unconventional GPU synergy.
However, the experiment comes with a crucial caveat鈥攑airing GPUs from different vendors, each with its set of drivers, is not a sustainable solution. It can lead to system instability, crashes, blue screens, and other complications. While this experiment proved successful and intriguing, it remains a whimsical yet impractical Endeavor for prolonged usage.
